The best thing about being a consultant…

Is that you can shut the world off whenever you want to.
The worse thing is that you have people that rely on you - often even more than if you worked for a big company. So you can’t really shut down for long.
How do you deal with burn out? I’m not talking about annual vacation time - I’m talking about the every few months or weeks - whatever - when you just need a couple days to get your head wrapped on correctly.
Does your boss understand that every now and then you need a brain-drain day, or is it completely unacceptable to lose a day of work no matter what?

Isn’t that was OPTO is for?!? When I need the time I just take it now. I am worthless to everyone else if I am not taking care of myself.
When I *do* take that time off? I am sleeping, working out and eating better than usual to get me energized to start afresh. I take care of myself on those occassions like I take care of my kid when she is sick: with extra tenderness. It usually helps … a lot.

@Deannie - I feel the same way - when I need the time, I just *need* the time. The best thing I can do for everyone involved is to take care of myself.
